Welcome to The Golden Getaway!
This is where we (Jenna & Luke) begin our journey into the unknown…
Dubai, UAE – The land of luxuries, endless disposable income, yacht parties, pool parties, brunches, lunches, pubs, clubs, late nights & early mornings, best friends, new relationships and let’s not forget our Sunday to Thursday work week (cough).
We met through our dearest friends, Kristina (aka cat face) and Tom (cat) during one of our many late night adventures to Trader Vic’s. Here we drank their infamous tikipookapooka which one would say contains 99% alcohol. We were pickled!!
We had an instant connection and were both looking for the same thing – change. Many nights we spent on our balcony overlooking Dubai Marina discussing and debating life. Until one night back in September we came up with the Golden Getaway over a bottle of whiskey and drank until it was dry.
Jenna: The next morning I ran off to work in a hurry only to purchase the largest world map I could find.
Luke: Jen came rushing home, eyes wide with excitement; only to be presented with one of the coolest laminated maps that I’ve seen since school. Time to excite the mind!
Every spare moment we drooled over this map, planning and plotting our route with sticky notes, whiskey and coke stained marks from over excitement, new sticky notes over old sticky notes to plot another route or region that we will get to see. In the end it was decided – THE AMERICAS
The idea was mesmerizing. We wanted to travel, to be free of a modern life, the accompanying constraints and challenge our existence & capabilities to survive in a foreign land with the knowledge acquired from our years of practice.
Luke: During the highs of visualizing and planning The Golden Getaway, to commence March 2015, suddenly my dear old dad and best friend fell ill. My family and I rushed home on the next flight back to the UK and what followed were days of despair. Inevitably and within a moment’s notice he was gone and the world as I knew it had a different road. This terrible moment in life sparked a push within me and I finally understood the saying, life is short. The most you can ever learn from life is on the move so bloody move.
Jenna: As soon as I got the news that Luke’s father had passed, I too was on the next flight out to my prince. What unfolded can only be explained as heart breaking. One of the most difficult situations I’ve ever been a part of and certainly the most difficult life event for someone I love.
However, just as ying and yang, this horrible upset was the driving force behind our early embarkation. We decided that waiting until March 2015 was absurd.
Life is short.
And so we booked our one way tickets to Houston, Texas, handed in our resignation, had many ‘see ya soon’ drinks and bade our farewells to the special people we met in the desert.
Luke: I left Dubai 5 weeks prior to my princess and flew to England where I was to finish my dad’s home off to the high building standard that he would be happy with.
Faster than a blink of the eye March 2014 came and so we were off, both hung over, Jen departing Dubai, Luke departing London, at the crack of my A$$ o’clock.
Luke: I am off to meet my darling girlfriend’s mummy for the first time and begin our trip of a lifetime. Commmmoooon noow !!!!!! Texas here I come.
